When planning for ski vacations and you're just starting out in the sport of skiing, you won't need to buy high-end clothing, but you will need to make sure that whatever you wear is warm and waterproof. Most ski boots have either top or rear entry. Rear entry boots let you slide your foot into the boot from the rear. Top entry boots use more clips and you need to put your foot in from the top. All in all, rear entry boots are easier to use but top entry boots will give you more support.
There are different adjustments you can make to your boots. The flex adjustment
lets you change the amount of resistance to the forward movement of your ankle, making it flex stiffer or softer. The boot will usually change its flexibility depending on how cold or warm the conditions are, and skiers can use the flex adjustment to compensate for that. The forward lean adjustment lets you change the angle that your shin makes with the boot closed. When you use this adjustment, you are able to change your all-important stance and center of mass. Some boots have a ramp angle adjustment that lets you change the angle at which your feet rest on your boot's soles. Using this adjustment, you are able to shift your center of mass forward or backward.
