Ski Vacations - Choosing Your Clothing and Boots

When planning for ski vacations and you're just starting out in the sport of skiing, you won't need to buy high-end clothing, but you will need to make sure that whatever you wear is warm and waterproof. You'll need gloves, goggles, a hat or helmet liner, long underwear, ski socks, ski pants and a jacket, and a turtleneck or fleece sweater.

On ski vacations, some skiers who are not novices and who ski regularly will want to purchase their ski boots instead of renting them because they want to feel as if their boots fit them correctly, and they don't want to have to ski with a boot that doesn't feel exactly right for their foot. A well-fitted ski boot can make the difference in whether you enjoy your skiing experience or not. When buying ski boots, be sure to try on as many boots as you can and you will be able to feel the difference between brands and style of boots on your feet.

Ski boots usually have a stiff plastic outer shell that gives the boot its rigid support and allows for direct transfer of your body movements to the skis. The outer shell protects your ankles and feet from bending too far which can cause sprains and other injuries. The shell is waterproof and tough enough to protect your feet and lower legs from the impacts you will experience on the slopes. The outer shell size is very important when looking for the appropriate ski boot because it will not flex or change it's size or shape at all.

The padded inside bladder keeps your feet warm and offers protection from impacts. Different manufacturers make varied liners for different foot shapes. Make sure that the liner is snug and has the shape that is the right match for your feet.. Just as with your street shoes, the inner boot will compress and change as you use your ski boot more.

Most ski boots have either top or rear entry. Rear entry boots let you slide your foot into the boot from the rear. Top entry boots use more clips and you need to put your foot in from the top. All in all, rear entry boots are easier to use but top entry boots will give you more support.

There are different adjustments you can make to your boots. The flex adjustment
lets you change the amount of resistance to the forward movement of your ankle, making it flex stiffer or softer. The boot will usually change its flexibility depending on how cold or warm the conditions are, and skiers can use the flex adjustment to compensate for that. The forward lean adjustment lets you change the angle that your shin makes with the boot closed. When you use this adjustment, you are able to change your all-important stance and center of mass. Some boots have a ramp angle adjustment that lets you change the angle at which your feet rest on your boot's soles. Using this adjustment, you are able to shift your center of mass forward or backward.

It is easy to see why ski vacations and the enjoyment that individual skiers experience is often dependent on a good pair of ski boots.
